What is Dysphagia
-
What it is
Swallowing problems, called dysphagia, happen when food or liquid has trouble moving from the mouth to the stomach. It can affect the mouth, throat, or esophagus, and can happen at any age. 1 in 25 adults in the U.S. experience Dysphagia each year.
-
Who is affected
Dysphagia becomes more common with age, especially 50 and older. Studies show 15–22% of adults over 50 report swallowing difficulties. Some research suggests up to half of adults over 60 may experience dysphagia in their lifetime.
-
Why it matters
Swallowing problems can lead to weight loss, dehydration, and malnutrition. About one-third of people with dysphagia develop aspiration pneumonia. Sadly, aspiration pneumonia causes over 60,000 deaths each year in the United States.
